When You Control Your Breath You Control Your Peace

Controlling your breath can be the doorway to controlling your peace. How you ask? By first understanding what it means to incorporate breathwork in your yoga practice. Controlled breathing techniques in yoga is known as Pranayama. Pranayama can be used to calm the nervous system and reduce stress.

A Simple Practice with Big Benefits
In a few simple steps you can practice breathing exercises such as alternate nostril breathing and box breathing. With benefits that include reduced stress levels and more focus. Overtime you will notice and get used to your lower cortisol levels.

-Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana): Start by closing the right nostril with the thumb then inhaling through the left nostril. Then alternate by closing the left nostril and breathing through the right nostril. Do this in 3 to 5 rounds.

-Box Breathing: Start by inhaling for 4 seconds, then holding your breath for 4 seconds then exhaling for 4 seconds and holding again with your mouth open for 4 seconds. Do this in 3 to 5 rounds.

Create Opportunities for Daily Practice
Take time daily to add deep breathing exercises to your yoga practice. Whether it’s when you wake up or just before bed. Take as little as 5 minutes to hold space for your body and your breathing. Being intentional and consistent is a great way to move from beginner to advanced in your yoga practice.
